Qualitative 2 Flashcards
(11 cards)
Running focus groups: Facilitating
Opening the circle: overview of topic, purpose, ground rules, general questions (positives)
Topic exploration:
Probing - could you explain further
Closing the circle:
Summarise main points and check with group , anything missed
Interview structure?
Highly structure:
- specific questions
- can be scored akin to a psychometric
- no deviation
Semi s structured:
- interview schedule
- prompts
- standard opening and closing
Unstructured:
- emerges as you go along
- no pre - set agenda
- general topic
- too way - changes throughout
What is Template Analysis?? (TA)
Can be used within a variety of methodologies and epistemology positions
Most commonly used to analyse interview transcripts
Refers to interactive development of a set of codes and results themes
So what is a template?
A list of codes and categories that represent themes revealed from the data that have been collected.
What is a code???
Label attached to a section of text ton index it as relating to a theme or issues in the data.
How do you do Template Analysis?
Initial template:
- analysing q sun- section
Work through the remaining materials using this template but amend and revise the template as you go along through a process of coding and interpretation.
How TA differs from thematic coding
Commonalities:
Searching across data
Finished products show what was done
Writing integral part of the analysis
Flexible
What are differences between TA and Thematic coding???
Thematic coding - move back & forward
TA - take one data set at a time
Levels of coding:
Thematic coding two level.
TA cab have three or four levels
Sample size: TA slightly more hungry
Use of tool: template as a working summary
How to do IPA??
Apply it to each unit of analysis (interviews transcript) preserve what is unique about each sense making experience.
Causes for IPA
Less is more in terms of sampling
Assumptions about the data and your epistemology so not suited to all research questions.
What is purpose of Focus Group??
Data collection:
Often supplementary data
One part of multi - method approach
Can be used within a number of paradigms
