quiz 7 Flashcards
(20 cards)
adenocarcinomas
malignant tumor formed from glandular structures; most common type of lung cancer especially among women and non smokers
anemia
condition in which there is a reduction in the number of circulating red blood cells (transport oxygen is decreased);
basal cell carcinomas
- most common form of skin cancer, it is the most common of all cancers
- chronic exposure to sunlight
- occurs most frequently on the face, ears, neck, scalp, shoulders, and back
benign tumor
- not harmful in effect; in particular, not malignant
- do not spread
- do not cause extensive damage
- grow by expansion
cysts
closed sac or pouch with a definite wall that contains fluid, semi fluid, or solid material (pus or other material); within or on body surfaces; can contain air
hemophilia
hereditary disease; spontaneous or excessive bleeding; lack of plasma protein to aid in blood clotting; affects men, transmitted by female
leukemia
cancer of white blood cells or tissues which synthesize white blood cells; signs white blood cell count elevated 10 to 100 times normal range
leukocytosis
increase in number of white blood cells in the blood; associated with a reactive change in blood; not to be confused with leukemia; generally caused by presence of infection; bacterial not viral
leukopenia
reactive; decreased number of WBC; neutrophils are most frequently affected; drugs or failure of the bone marrow can be the cause
malignant tumor
- tumor that invades surrounding tissues
- usually capable of producing metastases
- may recur and attempted removal
- likely to cause death unless adequately treated: cancer
neoplasms
the abnormal, excessive and uncontrolled multiplication of cells with the formation of a mass or new growth of tissue
nevus
birthmark or a mole on the skin, especially a birthmark in the form of a raised red patch
pernicious anemia
failure of the intrinsic factor, a substance secreted by the stomach that enables the body to absorb vitamin B12 hydrochloric acid normally found in the stomach is absent; main cause is gastric atrophy
polycythemia vera
also known as erythrocytosis; idiopathic disorder, abnormal high red blood cell count; life shortening disorder involving bone marrow; viscosity of blood causing thro
purpura
spontaneous bleeding in subcutaneous tissues associated with thrombocytopenia; hemorrhage into the skin, mucous membranes, internal organs or other tissues; common after chemotherapy or radiation therapy
rhabdomyomas
most common primary cardiac tumors in fetus, neonate, and young child; result of excessive growth of muscle elements within the muscular walls of the heart
sebaceous cysts
closed sac found just under the skin containing cheese like material formed from skin secretions
sickle cell anemia
hereditary; chronic; presence of a large number of crescent or sickle shaped red blood cells; hemoglobin A is replaced by hemoglobin S
squamous cell carcinomas
- second most common skin cancer
- arises from the epidermis and resembles the squamous cells in the outer layers of the skin
- may remain isolated in the epidermis, if not treated, will penetrate underlying tissues
thrombocytopenia
condition in which you have a low blood platelet count
