RAD Scoliosis Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are causes for structural scoliosis?
idiopathic
neuromuscular
congenital
neurofibromatosis
tumor
infection
trauma
What are causes for non-structural scoliosis?
postural
hysterical
nerve root irritation
inflammatory
leg length
hip contractures
What is the Hueter-Volkmann principle?
its an orthopedic rule regarding bone growth: “compression forces inhibit growth and tensile forces stimulate growth”
What is a possible cause for paralytic scoliosis?
Poliomyelitis: an infectious viral disease that can lead to ms weakness, flaccid paralysis and respiratory failure
What is Morquios syndrome?
a disorder in which the body cant break down glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). These GAGs accumulate in bones, cartilage and CT and lead to abnormal skeletal development
What are the complications resulting from scoliosis?
- Cardiopulmonary: pulmonary hypertension, CHF
- DJD: nerve root entrapment
- progression of the curve
- joint dysfunction: altered biomechanics, pain, instability
- radiation exposure
- psychological stress
- skin irritations: due to brace
- surgical complications
Which xray films can be taken to assess the scoliosis?
AP standing
PA standing
supine AP + lateral bending
lateral
