Railway Fundamentals 08 Pneumatic Flashcards
(16 cards)
What do all Electric Multiple Units (EMU) have and what do they do?
Air compressors - produce compressed air
What are compressor governors?
They monitor the air pressure within the main reservoir system and controls the operation of the air compressor (turn it on and off)
What do reservoirs do?
Store compressed air
What type of reservoirs can a train have? (3)
- main
- auxiliary
- supplementary
What do safety values do and where are they located?
Prevent the main reservoir from being overcharged should the air compressor fail to stop.
Located on the main reservoir
What do air dryers do?
They remove
- water particles
- oil and
- solid particles
From the compressed air
Which trains use air suspension systems?
Comeng
Siemens
Hcmt
What system do whistles use to work?
Pneumatic (air)
Which trains use pneumatic system (air) to raise the pantograph? (2)
Comeng
Hcmt
Which trains use the pneumatic system to deploy sanding equipment? (2)
Siemens
Hcmt
What does the friction braking system use?
Pneumatic (air)
Which trains use the pneumatic system to open and close saloon doors?
Comeng
What does the spring park brake system use to operate?
Pneumatic (air)
Can isolating cocks redirect compressed air?
Yes
What other name is the friction braking system known as?
Electric brake (Rheostatic or electro dynamic braking) or electro Pneumatic brake
How does a spring park brake work? (3)
- It stops the train from rolling away.
- It’s applied by mechanical force using a spring
- as air decreases the spring park brake is activated
- as air increases the spring park break is deactivated
