Raising Standards Flashcards

1
Q

In your view, what is the most important thing you can do to raise standards?

A

CONTEXT: Data: target setting, tracking & monitoring to review progress from year 7 onwards (SISRA computer package), use of Raiseonline to identify potential weaknesses and address them.
Raiseonline is retrospective whereas SISRA is current.
Maximising the numbers of students gaining 5 GCSEs at C or above is an important mission as it creates opportunities for the future of students as well as representing high performance for the school. In a Grammar school setting, the A*-A is an important benchmark and a sign of success.
For example, we need to use tracking after mock exams in Year 11 to identify students subject by subject and encourage staff to develop strategies i.e. to open a dialogue with students, help them to maximise their coursework score and give them specific advice on how they can improve their exam performance. Positive thinking and talking up success is the key. If we believe in them, then they will start to believe in themselves and have the confidence to go for it. Some students suffer from low self-esteem for a whole range of reasons and that damages their confidence. We can make a difference to their lives, even this time of year.
Ability + Positive attitude = Success
Self-belief can move mountains
Use of Pupil Premium for students on FSM
Revision classes for all KS4 students , examiner run workshops
Continuously monitor & evaluate schemes of work / assessment in their effectiveness to raise attainment
teaching and learning, AFL , monitoring, tracking, sharing good practice

ICT- IPads
Not education as we know it, breaking new grounds, can guarantee within 5 years, 5 years from now all will have an iPad
IPad mini = £240 for schools ( £269 in shops)

Your practice in this area as stated by OFSTED is already outstanding and clearly needs to be maintained. However, you can never stand still at the risk of becoming complacent, even if West Kirby is already a high achieving school.

Sort for West Kirby: A-C over the past 4years
2009 - 94%, 2010 - 97%, 2011 - 97%, 2012 - 99 %
& A
-A + 80th National ranking over the past 3 to 5 years

Looking at the school’s results on the Department for Education website for 2012, I found that
99% A-C including English and Maths
which clearly is outstanding
Looking at the average capped point score i.e. the measure of attainment in the best 8 results per student shows that the area where we could focus would be to encourage students to aim even higher to gain more A
& A.
In such a competitive environment for young people leaving school, we need to take every opportunity to improve their life chances and enable them to attend the university of their choice and obviously the top 10 if possible.
Bearing in mind the outstanding achievement of students here at West Kirby, developing students’ critical thinking and leadership skills is also essential to ensure success .
