Rate and Yield In Reversible Reactions Flashcards
What is rate and yield
Rate - the speed of the reaction
Yield - the amount of desired products made
Effect of temperature
Rate - High temperature means the particles have more energy so they can overcome the activation energy
More energy = more collisions
Yield - raise temperature favours endothermic reaction
Cool temp favours Exothermic reaction
Effect of concentration
Rate - High concentration means that there are more frequent collisions between particles so the rate is faster
Yield - add more reactants favours forwards reaction
Add more products favours backwards reaction
Effect of pressure
High pressure means a faster rate because particles are closer and collide more frequently
Yield - only applies to gases
Increase pressure favours side with fewer molecules
Decrease pressure favours side with more molecules
Effect of surface area
Bigger surface area ( powder ) means faster rate as there are more particles to collide with
Effect of catalyst
Rate - faster rate because it lowers activation energy so more particles have sufficient energy
Yield - no effect just means equilibrium is reached quicker
