Why is Diversity important?

Business value: diverse workforce = good business sense + meet requirements of equality legislation

Helps to recruit and retain best people

Important to value people's different backgrounds, knowledge, skills, and experiences, and using those differences to create a productive and effective workforce

Important to involve people when assessing risk and managing health and safety


Do facilities managers need to consider inclusive design?

Yes - important for staff to understand how to use accessible features and how to talk to disabled people, via disability awareness training

But it’s for ALL professionals involved in planning and design, construction and building, managing and maintenance to consider + policy-makers


What can Inclusive Design offer?

People first; ID places people at heart of design process and considers people from different racial backgrounds, disability, impairments etc

ID acknowledges diversity and difference and potential barriers

ID provides for flexibility in use: places designed so that they can adapt to changing uses and demands

Provides buildings and environments that are convenient and enjoyable to use for everyone
