Reflexes Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is it?
Quick response toa void harm or danger
Reflex arc.
A simple neutral pathway few (if any interneurons) that controls the reflex action
Involuntary, that is processed by the spinal cord, not the brain
Step 1
Sensory receptors detect that a stimulus has occurred, usually always negative
2
Activates the sensory neurons, which uses CNs to send impulse to the spinal cord
3
Spinal cord, an interneuron passes the message directly to the motor neurons, which send impulses to the muscles involved in the stimulus.
This muscle or organ is now called the stimulus
4
Effector muscles contract and move away
5
THEN, the message is sent to the brain shortly afterwards.
ONLY THEN is pain registered
Overall
Skips Decision making in the brain and goes directly through the spinal reflex arc
No brain involvement
Few (if any) interneurons used because the gap does not necessarily need to be closed between sensory neurons and motor neurons
Very rapid response
Reduced tissue damage is what it wants
Voluntary action (involves skeletal muscles)
When you consciously decide to do something, where your brain is involved in the thoughts development
e.g. picking up a pencil to write something
Involuntary action (1, reflex response, spinal cord) (Involves skeletal muscles)
Happen automatically
without thinking
Controlled by spinal cord and not the brain
Happens to protect body, but your brain is not controlling it
Blinking
Involuntary (2 controlled by brainstem) (Involves smooth muscles or glands, cardiac muscles too)
Important functions like breathing or your heartbeat are controlled by the brain stem alone
Happens automatically and continuously to keep your body alive so you don’t have to think about them
