The Nervous system Flashcards
(8 cards)
Made up of
Brain, spinal cord and nerves (brain stem too)
What does it do?
Sends messages or electrical signals between the brain and other parts of the body
Breathing, moving, speaking and seeing
What is it more specifically
Quick responses to survive immediate danger
Preventing damage
Humans constantly receive stimuli from the environment that we respond to
We can respond quickly using electrical and chemical signals that are passed between the nerves
Nerves are used, not hormones unlike Homeostasis
CNS - Interneurons
Central Nervous System
The brain and the spinal cord work together as the body’s processing centre
Brain - controls most of the body’s functions, movement thinking and speech
Spinal Cord - Carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body
PNS - Sensory and motor neurons
Peripheral Nervous system
- Nerves that branch off from the spinal cord and extend to all parts of the body
- Includes cranial, spinal nerves and their roots and branches
- Carries messages to and from CNS, the body’s organs, muscles and senses
Two other nervous systems inside PNS
Somatic - Controls body’s movements that are under our control like walking
Autonomic - Controls involuntary functions that the body does on its own, such as breathing and digestion
Two systems inside Autonomic system
Sympathetic (Fight of flight)
- Unconscious action helping your body from harm
Parasympathetic (rest and digest)
- Unconscious action
- Concerned for nutrients and rest
