Feasts— Passover
Passover was originally a small family-based religious feast where they would sacrifice lamb at dusk, and cook and eat it in haste, standing up, and with bitter herbs. Later it became a week long feast with large gatherings, sacrifices done by priests, songs sung and stories told, and other traditions. (Sort of like Christmas).

62
John 1-6
1 (review) Jesus is the word and the light. John bears witness. No one has seen God. Only the Son. John the Baptist comes, Jesus is Baptized. The disciples take notice, recognize him, and follow him. Peter is called Cephas (a stone). Nathaniel believes He is Christ because Jesus recognized him 2 Jesus turns the water to wine. He purifies the temple. He says that when they destroy “this temple” he will raise it again in three days (refering to his body). He didn’t reveal his identity. 3 Jesus explains what it means to be born again and receive the Holy Ghost. Nicodemus doesn’t understand. God sent His Son, He is the light of the world. John the Baptist testifies of Jesus. 4 The woman at the well. She perceives that he is a prophet. God promises his Spirit to those who worship Him in Spirit and in truth (JST). The disciples want Jesus to eat, He wants to serve His Father. They reap what they have not sewn. Many Samaritans believe He is the Christ. Jesus returns to Galilee and heals a boy with His word. 5 Jesus heals a man by the pool of Bethesda. Jesus works on the Sabbath because God the Father works on the Sabbath, and He is following His example. Jesus is the son of God and man and has the right to raise the dead and judge us in the end. He doesn’t judge out of his own imagination, but only out of the truth of God and God’s will. His witness is greater than John’s, yet the people don’t believe. They are condemned because they believe Moses and seek popularity, but not Jesus. 6 Jesus fed a multitude with five barley loaves and two small fishes. The multitude followed Jesus when he left (walking on water) to meet his disciples on a ship. He left because they wanted to make him king. The multitude followed in a separate ship. Jesus taught the multitude to seek to follow his teachings rather than just asking for bread by explaining that He is the “Bread of life,” and they need to eat of His flesh and drink of His blood, and live by Him. Many disciples left Him. He predicts the betrayal of Judas.
63
Amen
Firm, true. Acceptance. Christ was called “the amen, the faithful and true witness.”
64
Blasphemy
Contemptuous speech towards God or anything Holy. Jesus was accused of blasphemy (it was not blasphemy only because Jesus spoke the truth.) To the disciples of Christ, the Pharisees would have been the blasphemous ones.
65
Blindness
There are many cases of blindness in the Bible due to different causes. Jesus healed the blind physically and spiritually. Some Jews believed all blindness was a punishment for sin, but Jesus clarified that this is not always the case.
66
Feasts—s.v. Dedication
Feast instituted in the days of Judas Maccabaeus to celebrate the rededication of the temple and altar. No mourning or fasting is allowed on feast week (8 days). They carried Palms and other leaves and illuminated everything. Also known as the Feast of Lights. The Jews tried to stone Jesus on Solomon’s Porch during this feast.
67
Comforter
The Holy Ghost is the first comforter. Jesus Himself is the second comforter.
68
Elias
Elias is the New Testament (Greek) name for Elijah the prophet. Elias also means “one who goes before.” John the Baptist was the preparer, and Jesus was the restorer (both Eliases). 72
Solomon's Porch
A cloister on the eastern side of the court of the gentiles in Herod’s temple.
73
Spikenard
“Genuine” or “liquid” nard. Nard was made from the root of a tree and had a strong aromatic odor.
74
John 7-17
7. Jesus goes to the feast in secret. He teaches at the temple. He demonstrates that he doesn't seek his own glory, but only that of He who sent him. He counsels them (JST) not to judge by their traditions, but to judge righteously. Jesus says he can make a man whole on the sabbath just like they can circumcise someone on the sabbath. They can't believe that the Messiah would come from a place they know like Galilee. They send officers to apprehend him, but they marvel at the way he speaks. He testifies that those who believe will receive the Holy Ghost. 8. They bring to Jesus the woman caught in adultery. He who has no sin was to cast the first stone. They each left. The pharisees argue with Jesus. The pharisees say they are of Abraham, Jesus says they're not because the do not follow Abraham's example. Jesus testifies that if they were of God they would "bare" and "receive" (JST) his words. Jesus says he is of him who sent him. The Pharisees wonder who he thinks he is. Jesus says "before Abraham was: I am" and they picked up stones to stone Him. 9. Jesus heals a man born blind on the Sabbath. The Pharisees trouble over this, some saying that this miracle must be of God, others saying that because he healed on the Sabbath, he can't be of God. The once blind man says he doesn't know, but he knows he was healed. Jesus says that he must do this work while he is with them, because he won't always be with them (JST). Jesus asks the once blind man if he will believe in the Son of God, the blind man says yes. Jesus says "I am he" and the once blind man believes. 10. Jesus is the gate to the sheep, any who don't testify of him (JST) are thieves and robbers. He is the good shepherd, and he lays down his life for the sheep. The hireling runs off when there's danger because he doesn't care for the sheep. His sheep hear his voice. There are other sheep not of this fold. The pharisees ask if he's the Messiah, they want to be told plainly. Jesus says he already told them, but they didn't want to hear it because they are not his sheep. They wanted to stone him because he "maketh himself a God." He said that they are all gods, and they can see for themselves if his works are the works of his Father. Jesus escaped. Many believed. 11. Jesus hears that Lazarus is sick, waits two days, and says he's going to go wake him from his sleep (death). The disciples think Jesus is walking into his own death, so they decide to go and die with him (JST) because they did not know the power of God. When he gets there, Mary says that if he had been there he could have saved Lazarus. Jesus asked Mary if she would believe in HIm. Jesus weeps with them. He asks for the grave to be opened and Lazarus came out all wrapped in a napkin. Caiaphas plots to kill Jesus, Jesus is no longer public about who he is. The priests and pharisees order for Jesus to be apprehended. 12. Martha serves a meal to the Lord, Lazarus eats with them. Mary dumps spikenard (JST which she had saved for this purpose) on Jesus, and Judas (who keeps the purse) protests. Many people came to see Lazarus alive. The chief priests talked about putting Lazarus to death too. Jesus rides an ass into town while people put down palm leaves (triumphal entry) and (in retrospect) fulfills prophecy. Jesus says his time to be glorified has come, and compares himself to a dying ear of corn that brings life. (Love life --> lose it. hate life ---> find it). God speaks from heaven glorifying His name. Jesus hints at his crucifixion saying he will be lifted up. While ye have light, walk in the light. Very few people believed, and some that did chose not to act on it. He is the light and the image of the father, and he hasn't come to judge the world. Jesus testifies that His words will judge those who don't listen. 13. Satan put it in the heart of Judas to betray Jesus. Jesus washes the apostle's feet. Peter refuses, Jesus insists, Peter asks for more washing, Jesus says just feet is enough. Jesus says they are not all clean (referring to Judas). Jesus instructs them to wash each other's feet. He announces that someone will betray him. He reveals (privately) that its Judas. Jesus calls the disciples little children. He teaches them to love one another. Peter says he'll lay down his life for Jesus. Jesus prophesies of Peter's denial. 14. Jesus and the father are one. Jesus is the way the truth and the life. Philip wants to see the Father. Jesus explains that he who believes on him will do greater works. If they pray for anything in His name, he'll do it. "If ye love me, keep my commandments." He will provide another comforter. Jesus will make his abode with those that love Him and keep His words. "My peace I leave with you." Jesus warns them about the prince of darkness (JST) having power over them. Jesus wants to show he is obedient. 15. Jesus is the vine, they are the branches. Keep his commandments, He will answer prayers. The world will hate them. It hated him first. The spirit will testify of Christ. 16. They will be persecuted in the name of God. Jesus is telling them this because he's leaving. The spirit of truth will testify. Jesus compares his death and resurrection to the pains and joys of childbirth. Anything they ask it will be given. In the world they will have tribulation, but be of good cheer because Christ has overcome the world. 17. Jesus prays for those God has given him out of the world. He and the father are. one. He prays for the disciples to be one in Them as well. The world has not known God.
75
John 18-21
18. Judas meets Jesus at the garden, Jesus asks who they seek and when He says “I am He” they fall to the ground. They ask and he answers again. The prayer in the garden is not mentioned. Peter and another Disciple both follow. Jesus speaks confidently at his trial and asks them to speak to the public to know what he said. Jesus is brought before Pilate. He says his kingdom is not of this world. Everyone who is of the truth will hear his voice. Pilate asks, what is truth? And finds no fault in Jesus. Pilate seeks to release Jesus at the feast. 19. Pilate finds no fault in Jesus, the crowd wants him crucified. Pilate gets nervous and asks Jesus who he is. Jesus doesn't answer. Pilate get's frustrated, but Jesus says that the power Pilate has is given to him from God. Pilate tried to release him, but the crowd questioned Pilate's loyalty to Caesar. Pilate allows Jesus to be crucified, and writes JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. He won't change it even though the Pharisees object. They cast lots for Christ's clothes. Jesus drinks vinegar, says "it is finished" and gives up the ghost. They don't break his legs. They pierce his side, and out comes blood and water. Joseph of Arimathaea claims the body, bwinds it in linen and spices, and lay him in the sepulcher where there was a garden. 20. Mary Magdalen runs to the tomb and sees the stone rolled away (JST) and two angels sitting on it. She runs and finds the disciples. They come back, one gets there first but doesn’t go in. Peter goes in and finds Jesus’s napkin on the ground, and the part that was on his head is set aside separately. Mary weeps, Jesus appears to Mary, but doesn’t let her touch (JST hold) Him. Jesus appears to the 11 except Thomas. He gives them the Holy Ghost and sends them out as God sent Him. They can remit and retain the sins of others. Thomas says he won’t believe unless he feels the wounds of the Lord. Eight days later Jesus appears and invites him to feel them. Blessed are they that see not, and believe. There were many other signs, but these were written so you can believe on His name and have eternal life. 21. Jesus appears at the sea of Tiberius and asks the disciples to cast their net on the right side of the ship. They haul an enormous amount of fish. Peter recognizes him, puts his coat on (he was naked?) and jumps into the water to swim to Jesus. Jesus gives them bread and fish, and commands Peter three times to feed his sheep after asking “lovest thou me.” Peter wonders about John, and Jesus says “If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?” John wrote this gospel. He testified that it is true. There are not enough books in all the world to contain all that Jesus did.
76
Cedron
The ravine below the eastern wall of Jerusalem. Called Kidron in the Old Testament.
77
Ascension
40 days after His resurrection, Christ Ascended into heaven. During the 40 days he taught the apostles "of things pertaining to the kingdom of God."
78
Clean and Unclean
A big part of religious and social culture among the Israelites. Certain foods were clean (acceptable to eat) others were unclean. Lepers, the homes of gentiles, dead bodies, and blood were all unclean. To be cleansed you would need to isolate for a day and then wash your body, or (in more serious cases) provide a sin offering to God.
79
Hyssop
A type of wild herb used in the Passover, sprinkled for the purification of lepers, and sprinkled over the sacrifice of the red heifer. According to John, there was hyssop on the sponge of vinegar offered to Jesus.

Resurrection
The reuniting of spirit and flesh and bone immortally. Jesus was the first to be resurrected. There are different glories. The resurrection for the just comes first. Re = to do again Surgere = to rise (surge forth) Many old testament writers wrote about this (like Job). The dead look upon the separation from their bodies as bondage. D&C 93 We cannot receive a fullness of joy without resurrection.
83
Exegesis vs Eisegesis
Exegesis: “to lead or guide out” the explanation of scriptural text is based on careful and objective analysis. (Circumstances and textual intent of the author). Eisegesis: “to lead or guide in” The interpretation of scriptural text based on a subjective non-analytical reading. (The interpreter injects meaning).
84
JST of Matthew and John
The title is changed to “the testimony of” Matthew/John
85
3 Nephi 12-13
Ch.12 Talks about the authority to baptize. Blessed are those who are baptized. Beatitudes with some differences: Blessed are the poor in spirit THAT COME UNTO ME. Blessed are those that hunger and thirst after righteousness, they shall be filled WITH THE HOLY GHOST. I GIVE UNTO YOU to be the salt and the light. V.18 it HATH all been fulfilled (past tense) Ch.13 Give alms in secret. No “Thy kingdom come” no “daily bread.” Turns to the apostles and tells them to remember to take no thought for the morrow. Ch 14. Turns to the multitude again. Identical to Matthew 7:1-27.
86
Be ye therefore Perfect Eventually - Jefferey R. Holland
Don’t demean or vilify yourself! Be grateful God is perfect. He exemplifies the beatitudes. Perfection is a gift through grace. Forgive because we have an incomprehensible debt to God. The Lord’s forgiveness is an UNFATHOMABLE gift. No flawless performances, just strive to improve. Finished and complete = perfection. Even the Lord went from grace to grace.
87
“Where is…?” Matthew 2:2 footnote A

4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests, and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them, saying, Where is the place that is written of by the prophets, in which Christ should be born? For he greatly feared, yet he believed not the prophets. 5 And they said unto him, It is written by the prophets, that he should be born in Bethlehem of Judea, for thus have they said, 6 The word of the Lord came unto us, saying, And thou Bethlehem, which lieth in the land of Judea, in thee shall be born a prince, which art not the least among the princes of Judea; for out of thee shall come the Messiah, who shall save my people Israel. (He feared, but didn’t believe the prophets. They specify a MESSIAH, not just a governor, to save the people)
