About 600–592 B.C.
Anna
Widow of 84 years that greeted infant Jesus at the Temple
Circumcision
Male Israelites were circumcised as a token of the Abrahamic Covenant. It was debated whether or not it was necessary after the coming of Christ.
Dove—Sign of
Truth, innocence, Holy Ghost. The devil cannot appear as a dove. Sign to John the Baptist, Abraham, and probably Adam.
LIKE a dove (aka gently), not AS a dove.
Locusts
Large flying insects that destroy all vegetation. Sometimes cooked and eaten.
Magi
“Wise men” spiritually sensitive, precise revelation. Probably represented a branch of the Lord’s people somewhere east of Palestine and returned to bear witness of Christ to their people.
Pinnacle of the Temple
It is uncertain what is meant; probably part of the roof of one of the temple porches overlooking the deep valley of the Kidron.
Temple
House of the Lord. Sanctuary for sacred ceremonies. The Lord’s people have always been commanded to build Temples. Mountains were used in the event of an emergency. After Jesus, work could be done for the dead.
Matthew 5-7
Sermon on the Mount
5. Go above and beyond the law of Moses. Don’t contend, lust, divorce, or swear. Turn the other cheek. Love your enemies. Be perfect like your Father in Heaven.
6. The Lord’s Prayer— Give, pray, and fast privately. Store your treasures in Heaven. You can’t serve God and money, consider the lilies of the field.
7. Judge not; no pearls before swine; seek, ask, and knock; golden rule; the gate is strait; beware false prophets; build upon the rock.
Beatitudes
Declarations of blessedness. Each attribute builds on the previous one, they are interrelated attributes of perfection.
INTERRELATED and PROGRESSIVE.
Gehenna
The valley of Hinnom. South of Jerusalem, the scene of Moloch worship, polluted by Josiah; afterwards a place in which the refuse of the city was burned, and for that reason it was symbolic of the place of torment after death.
Fiery trash dump. (Hell fire)
Mammon
An Aramaic word meaning “riches,” personified in Matt. 6:24; Luke 16:9, 11, 13.
Prayer
Prayers have been offered since the beginning. Prayer accompanied sacrifice. Prayers are the correspondence between God and His children. We must say them in Christ’s name, not according to our own selfishness.
Sacrifices (1st
four paragraphs)
Sacrifices of the firstlings of the flock in similitude of the Son of God have existed since the time of Adam. The law of Moses added special procedural rules. There were sin offerings, burnt offerings, and peace offerings.
1) The presentation of the sacrifice
2) The laying on of hands
3) The slaughtering of the animal
4) The pouring out or sprinkling of the blood
5) Burning the sacrifice on the altar.
6) The sacrificial meal (in the case of the peace offering only).
Sermon on the Mount
A discourse by the Lord to His disciples who were about to be sent forth on missions. It should be placed chronologically soon after the calling of the Twelve. Matthew’s version is greatly enhanced by the footnotes and the JST translation. Luke’s version omits some parts to direct it to a wider audience (not just disciples on missions).
3 Nephi 12-14
Sermon on the mount directed at the People in the Americas. Adds important details to the Beatitudes. Excludes elements that only apply to the culture in Jerusalem.
Be ye Therefore Perfect, Eventually
Jeffery R. Holland. Don’t beat up on yourself. God is perfect, he has all the beatitudes. Perfection is a gift through grace. Forgive. Like Christ, we can grow from grace to grace until we are perfect (finished).
What are the different Accounts of the atonement, and how do they differ from one another?
