Flashcards in renal Deck (19):
1

acute pyelonephrtiis

flank pain, unilateral
n/v

2

acute renal failure

abrupt oliguria, edema, weight gain

ELEVATED creatinine
GFR

3

right kidney lower than the left dt liver

true

4

average U/O
oliguria

u/o=1500ml
oliguria-

5

when renal fxn decrease, CR increase

normal levels

male: .7-1.4
female:.6-1.2

6

factors that effect serum creatinine

gender (males higher), race (AA higher), muscle mass, age (less)

7

creatine clearance

24 hour urine test
not effected by fluid, diet, exercise
more accurate than serum creatinine

8

GFR normal value

>90 ml/min

9

GFR in renal failure

10

casts

shaped like cylinders, RBC casts and protinuria = glomerulonephiritis

11

normal WBC and RBC amount

WBC:

12

nitrates

= e.coli

13

augmentin

amoxicillin and clavunate
its a PCN

14

UTI rx if s/s >48-72 hr

order urine C&S, r/o pyelonephritis.
switch to cipro/ofloxacin and treat 7-10 days

15

uti treatment

3 days:

bactrim/septra
sulfa allergy: nitrofurantoid, augmentin

urine will b eorange, will stain contact lenses, avoid if liver/renal disease

16

complicated UTI

treat 7 days, urinalysis and urine c&S before and after (not needed if healthy/non pregnant adult)

males, DM, pregnancy, old/young, recurrent

17

nitrofurantoin (macrobid) contraindicated in renal failure

true

18

definition of UTI

>10,000 (ten/small five) CFU/ml of ONE organism

19

kidney stone diet

avoid high oxalate foods; rhubarb, spinach, beets, chocolate, tea, meats
