Reproduction Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is the main role of the reproductive system
Produce Gametes, Fertilisation & development of foetus Production of reproductive hormones.
What are the three main glands in the male reproductive system
prostate, seminal, bulbo-urethral glands
What are the main muscles responsible in controlling testes temperature
Dartos, Cremaster
What other type of organ do the testes act as
endocrine and exocrine
What is Tunical Albugina
connective tissue that surrounds the testes and splits the inside into 300 lobules
In the testes discuss the role of the lobules
each lobule contains 1-4 seminiferous tubules which produces sperm. The tubules empty into ductules
Spermatogenesis
High proliferation rate but also high mutation rate, survive 48 hours in female
what is the process of spermatogenesis
Spermatogenia (Mitotic Proliferation), then to Spermatocytes (Meiotic devision, halves chromosome number) then Spermatids (After this only morphological chages)
What is cryptorchidism
When the testes do not decent normally during pregnancy, which can cause infertility and testicular cancer
What is the Inguinal canal
Bilateral passageway between the deep and superficial inguinal rings, Opens in the inguinal nerve. Contains the illoinguinal nerve and spermatic nerve. Also arteries nerve and veins. Often a cause of hernea forming in men
What is the role of the spermatic chord
Runs through the inguinal canal to the scrotum. Covered in Fascia. contains, Vas Deferens, lymphatic vessels and nerves, Blood supply for testes and cremasteric muscles
What does the Epididymis do
Recycles damaged spermatoza and Stores & Matures Spermatoza for around 12-16 days. Also lined with cilia .
What is the Vas Deferens
Strong muscular tube that ascends from the epididymis through the inguinal canal to the pelvis. Enlarges at the Ampulla where it joins the seminal vesicle to form the ejaculatory duct. It then empties into the prostatic urethra.
What is the role and location of the seminal vesicles
Located near the ampulla and produces the seman. The seman as a high level of fructose which keeps the sperm alive. Forms an Alkaline secretion
Describe the role of the prostate gland
Inferior to the urinary bladder & surrounds the prostatic urethra. produces 30% of the seman. (temperary coagulation of sperm
What does the Bulbourethral Gland
Inferior to prostate, Produces 5% of seman. Alkaline and released first to neutralise to urine in the urethra.
What are the sections in the urethra.
Prostatic - Receives the ejaculatory and Prostatic ducts
Membranous - shortest
spongy - Through the corpus spongiosm to the external urethral orifice. Receives the bulbourethral gland ducts.
Name the 5 main parts of the female reproductive system
Overies, Fallopian tubes, Uterous, Vagina, External Genitalia
what is ogenesis
the production of female gametes. starts in the fetus
What is the process ovulation
The release of a secondary oocyte from the ovary into peritoneal cavity
What happens during fertilization
Sperm binds to & penetrates oocyte plasma membrane is now reffered to as a Zygote
