Research Medicine Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
- What is biomedical research?
- Why animal models? (3)
- LVTs role (2)
A
- Broad area of science that looks for ways to prevent & treat diseases that cause illness and death in people and animals.
- Involves studying biological processes & diseases using various models, including animals. - Essential for understanding complex bio systems
- Bridge the gap between vitro (cell culture) studies and human clinical trials
- Crucial for drug development, vax testing, & understanding disease pathogenesis - LVT role
- Integral scientific partners!
- Ensure animal welfare, data integrity, & regulatory compliance
2
Q
Three R’s of the Foundation of Research in research medicine
*LVTs adhere to these!
A
Reduce: Number of animals used.
Refine: Tests to cause animals less stress.
Replace: Animal studies with other methods.

Q
LVT Responsibilities (3)
A
- Daily animal husbandry
- Providing appropriate housing, nutrition, and environmental enrichment.
- Monitoring animal health and behavior for subtle changes. - Preventative health care
- Meds, vax, para control
- Assisting with routine physicals & wellness testing. - Recognizing & alleviating pain/distress
- Identify these signs
- Implement analgesic & supportive care protocols
- Provide environmental enrichment, QOL assessment/care.
