Research Methods - reliability and validity Flashcards
What is reliability?
Extent to which something is consistent
(Produce same or similar results each time)
What is test-retest reliability?
Measures test consistency (reliability of test over time)
If results on the test achieve correlation co-efficient of 0.8 or above, we can assume test is reliable
What is inter-rater reliability?
Degree of agreement among raters/observers
If there’s a 0.8+ correlation between raters, the measure is reliable
What is validity?
Extent to which something is measuring what it’s claiming to measure
What is internal validity?
Extent to which study can establish cause-and-effect relationship between the IV and DV
What is external validity?
Extent to which results can be generalised to other settings
What is meant by ecological validity?
Whether data is generalisable to the real-word
What is meant by population validity?
Whether data is generalisable to population as a whole
What is meant by temporal validity?
Whether data is generalisable to today’s time period
What is construct validity?
Degree to which a test measures what it’s claiming to measure
What is concurrent validity?
Whether a measure is in agreement with a pre-existing measure that is validated for the same (very similar) concept
Gauged by the correlating measures against each other (0.8+)
What is predictive validity?
Degree to which a test accurately predicts a criterion that will occur in the future
What is face/logical validity?
You apply a superficial and subjective assessment of whether or not your study measures what it’s supposed to measure (opinion)
