What are strengths of self reports?

A
  • Allows ppts. to describe their own experiences, providing rich qualitative data
  • Helps explain reasons behind behaviours
  • Easy to gather large amount of data (increase generalisability)
  • You can ask hypothetical questions without having to set up experiment / observation

What are limitations of self reports?

A
  • Ppts. may try to come across in most socially acceptable way (social desirability bias) which may yield inaccurate responses
  • Only useful if ppt. willing to disclose info
  • Relies on ppt. having introspective ability to understand their own behaviour, thoughts and feelings
  • Acquiescence bias often present (people agreeing with statements)
  • Ppts. may misinterpret questions (subjective)
