Q

Why does ATP store energy

A

because the energy transferred by respiration cannot be used directly by cells, so it is used to make a substance called ATP

Q

how to test for carbon dioxide production during respiration

A
  • soak some dried beans in water for a day or two, they will start germinating and respiring
  • put hydrogen-carbonate indicator into two test tubes
  • seal the test tube with bung
  • leave apparatus for set period of time
  • during that time the indicator would have turned from orange to yellow due to the presence of carbon dioxide by the respiring beans

-use a control tube with boiled, dead beans to show hydrogen-carbonate indicator does not turn yellow by itself

Q

How do you test for temperature change by repsiration

A
  • add each set of beans to a vacuum flask
  • place a thermometer into each flask and seal the top with cotton wool
  • repeat experiment 5 times
  • flask is well-insulated so when the beans respire the test flask’s temperature increases
  • use a control flask to show temperature doesn’t increase with the dead beans.
