Acetylcysteine

A
  • mucolytic
  • Tx: CF, pneumonia, bronchitis
  • Antidote for acetaminophen overdose
  • Given nebulizer to loosen secretions and clear airway
  • AE: can cause worsen bronchospasm in asthma pt
  • Smells like rotten eggs
  • don’t exceed recommended dose

A
  • Bronchodilators
  • Suffix: -terol
  • SE: tacky, palps, arrhythmias, HTN, Nervousness/anxiety, insomnia/restless, tremors (aka fight or flight)
  • Broncho, wait 5 min, then corticosteroid
  • rinse mouth
  • spacer can decrease thrush

  • Think fight or flight SEs
  • Shake well before admin

  • Expectorants

  • Tx: pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis, CF, trach care
  • mobilize secretions
  • reduce viscosity of secretions
  • SE: N/V, HA, drowsiness, rash

Inhaled Anticholinergics

A

Tx: COPD, congestion (rhinitis), Allergy induced asthma, exercise induced- bronchospasm

  • Suffix: -tropium
  • No not swallow capsules, they go in specialized inhalers
  • SE: can’t see, spit, pee, poop
  • Dont take if peanut allergy
  • increase fluids/ candy for dry mouth
  • often taken with albuterol

A

-bronchodilator
Prevents leukotriene release as a inflammatory response
-Tx: chronic asthma and seasonal allergies
-suffix: -lukast
-SE: HA and Flu symptoms
-Long term management
-takes 1-2 wks to work

Theophylline

A

-therapeutic 10-20
>20 = toxic
-Signs of toxicity: anorexia, N/V, Insomnia, Restless/nervous, SEIZURES, LIFE- threatening arrhythmias
-Avoid caffeine worn SE and increase serum levels

-suffux: -ramine or -adine (2nd gen)
SE: Sedation, anticholinergic se's
-2nd generations have less SE
-Are OTC meds (aka Benadryl)
