What is albuterol used for?
Acute asthma treatment
What does albuterol do and what is its MOA?
It produces bronchodilation via beta 2 adrenergic agonism
What is the major side effect related nursing consideration of albuterol?
Because albuterol is a sympathomimetic, it may cause jitteryness, tachycardia, and should be cautioned in patients with HTN, serizure disorders or Diabetes
What is Beclomethasone used to treat?
Asthma and allergic rhinitis
What is the major way beclomethasone benefits asthma patients?
Decreases inflammatory mediators, decreasing the inflammatory response in patients
What is unique about beclomethasone compared to other respiratory drugs? (2)
Because it’s a steroid it takes 3-4 weeks for optimal effects
Side effects are mouth related (hoarsness, dry mouth, taste changes, and thrush)
What is montelukast used to treat?
Asthma and Allergies
How does montelukast work to treat asthma?
It blocks leukotrienes which prophylactically decreases inflammation
What is unique about Montelukast? (2)
Goal is to reduce reliance on acute asthma drugs
Should be taken at night because that’s when asthma symptoms are worse
What does ipratropium treat?
COPD and Asthma related bronchoconstriction
What is the effect of Ipratropium and how does it achieve that effect?
It’s an Anticholinergic (opium) which acts on bronchioles for bronchodilation and reduces bronchospasms
What are the major nursing considerations w/ ipratropium? (2)
Mouth irritant so rinse your mouth out after use
Pts with soy or peanut allergies should not use!
