Q
Pilot Study Definition:
A
a small scale trial run of the research before the real main scale research (MP1) takes place to identify any problems and amend them (MP2)
3
Q
Give 4 aims of a pilot study:
A
- Checks standardised procedure and general design.
- Check that the amount of time given to ppts is enough to complete the task.
- For questionnaires and interviews, make sure the questions are clear.
- For observations, check coding systems and behaviour categories are understood
- Extraneous variables can be identified and possibly eliminated.
- Ask the ppts to discuss their experiences of the experiment.
- Any problems can be identified and adjusted before the main study.
4
Q
How to deal with ethical issue of informed consent
A
- Presumptive Consent: gaining consent from a similar set of students who won’t be doing the study
- Prior Informed Consent: getting consent from ppts of things that ‘could’ happen
- Parental Consent: when ppts are too young to give consent, this is gained from parents
Retrospective consent = ppts give/don’t give consent during debrief
