Strength of Mode
Easy to calculate, less prone to distortion by extreme scores , unlike mean, highly influenced by extreme scores, as it takes all data into account
Weakness of Mode
Doesn’t take all data into account = ↓ accurate. Not useful if ≥1 mode in data set. Unlike mean, takes all data into acc
Strength of Median
Easy to calculate. Not affected by extreme values. Unlike mean, highly influenced by extreme scores, as it takes all data into account
Weakness of Median
Not as sensitive as mean as doesn’t use all scores meaning less useful results.
Strength of Mean
Most accurate and sensitive measure of central tendency as uses all data sets, gives a more representative understanding. Unlike median, doesn’t take all data into account
Weakness of Mean
Affected by extreme scores as takes all scores into account which can result in misleading interpretation of results
Strength of Range
Easy and quick to calculate as it only uses 2 pieces of data to calculate. unlike SD, which is more complicated and time consuming to calculate
Weakness of Range
Can be distorted by extreme scores, as it only takes into account the smallest and largest scores, so an inaccurate range could be calculated
Strength of Standard Deviation
less easily distorted by extreme values → takes into account the distance of each score from the mean, not just the distance from the highest and lowest
Weakness of Range
More complicated and time consuming to calculate. Unlike range which is quick and easy to calculate
What does a large standard deviation suggest
data more spread around mean → more variation → more individual differences in scores
