RM - Correlation Flashcards
(4 cards)
Correlation Definition:
a correlation shows a link/relationship between variables (1) (these are known as co-variables 1 and 2 (COV1/2)). No IV and DV, no manipulation of variables by researcher (2)
Correlation Coefficient Definition
a result(number) from a correlation statistical test which tells us how strong/weak a correlation is (1)
Strength of Correlation:
no manipulation of variables → appropriate to use when studying sensitive issues that may raise ethical issues or when it would be inappropriate to manipulate a situation (context) → experiment, it would be unethical and impractical to investigate a cause and effect
Weakness of Correlations:
difficult to establish a cause and effect between 2 co-variables → only a relationship has been found between the 2 variables (context) → other intervening variables could have been responsible for the relationship found (context) → ↓ internal validity
