RNA Splicing Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is RNA splicing?
When non-coding parts of a gene are ‘edited out’ before the coding transcript can be turned into a protein
What is a primary transcript?
When the gene is initially copied in full (including introns and exons)
Define the term ‘exons’
The coding regions of genes/DNA which code for amino acids
What is meant by an ‘intron’
The non-coding part of a gene/DNA
What happens to the primary transcript of mRNA?
It is processed to remove the introns and join the exons together. Known as a mature transcript.
After the introns are removed, and exons joined together, what is the molecule known as?
The mature mRNA transcript
Name the benefit of RNA splicing
Is that one gene can produce many different proteins as a result of what segments are treated as introns and exons
