Q

What type of drug is the Combined Pill

A

Oestrogen +

Progestins

2
Q

What is the mechanism of action of the combined pill

A

• Oestrogen and Progesterone causes negative
feedback to the anterior pituitary - thus inhibit LH/
FSH release, which prevents release of the oocyte.
• Also thickens cervical mucus and endometrial lining
to prevent sperm reaching the egg.
• Prevent proliferation of stratum functionalis, making
it incompatible for implantation.

3
Q

What is the Combined Pill used for?

A

Contraception

4
Q

What class of drug is the mini pill?

A

Continuous

Progestins

5
Q

What is the mechanism of action of the mini pill

A

• Progesterone-only pill to be taken everyday at the
same time.
• Thickens cervical mucus, prevent sperm reaching
egg.

6
Q

What is the mini pill used for

A

Contraception

7
Q

What class of drug is Furosemide?

A

Loop Diuretic

8
Q

What is the mechanism of action of Furosemide?

A

Inhibits the action of the NK2CL transporter in the
ascending limb of the loop of Henle. Loop diuretics
are the most powerful diuretics

9
Q

What is Furosemide used to treat?

A

Pulmonary Oedema
Hypertension
Hypercalcaemia
Renal Failure/CKD

10
Q

What class of drug is Bendroflumethiazide?

A

Thiazide Diuretics

11
Q

What is the mechanism of action of Bendroflumethiazide?

A

They act on the DCT inhibiting the Na+/Cl-

transporter, causing natriuresis (sodium excretion)

12
Q

What is Bendroflumethiazide used to treat?

A

Hypertension
Hypercalcuria (kidney stones)
Mild heart failure
Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus

13
Q

What class of drug is Amiloride

A

K+ Sparing Diuretics

14
Q

What is the mechanism of action of Amiloride

A

Directly blocks ENaC transports on the principal cells of the DCT. Results in Na+ secretion and K+ retention

15
Q

What is Amiloride used to treat?

A

Hypokalaemia

Hypertension

16
Q

What class of drug is Spironolactone?

A

K+ Sparing Diuretics

17
Q

What is the mechanism of action of Spironolactone

A

Antagonist for the mineralocorticoid receptors on principal cells that Aldosterone normally binds to.

18
Q

What is Spironolactone used to treat?

A

Hypertension

Hyperaldosteronism
