Where most first participate and is often at an early age in primary school or after school clubs.
This also involves university teams or your local weekend team often run by volunteers
County progammes
Are run in most sports. This will be organized by your Regional Governing body such as Nottinghamshire Schools FA, who will select the best performers from their leagues to compete in a county competition
Regional programmes
Regional programmes will look to select teams such as the Midlands
to play against the other regions
National Age Group Programmes
English School Girls U15’s will hold training camps at the national institutes of sport such as Lilleshall or St Georges Park. Coaches can spend more time working individually with performers and will give them training programmes to take away
Level 1 of the world class programme
World Class Podium - Support sports and athletes with
realistic medal-winning capabilities at the next Olympic Games or
gold medal-winning at the Paralympic Games (i.e. are a maximum of
four years away from the podium) LA 2028
Level 2 of the world class programme
World Class Podium Potential - Designed to support the stage of the pathway immediately beneath Podium. It supports sports and athletes that have demonstrated realistic medal winning capabilities for future Olympic or Paralympic Games. Athletes at PP level are typically four to six years away from the podium. Brisbane 2032
Further recruitment of sports talent for performance pathway:
Phase 1 - Physical and skill-based tests, varying for different sports. (E.g. Sprints, jumps, aerobic fitness, upper/lower body strength tests). Training and competition of the athlete also looked at.
Phase 2-3 – Athletes suitability for the sport + preparation for training and development. Functional movement screening, performance lifestyle workshops, psychology + behavioural assessments.
Confirmation phase - Selected athletes train over 6-12 months.
Athletes are continually assessed, and their rate of progress is recorded to judge suitability for elite sport

GIRLS FOR GOLD:
Female talent recruitment drive – seeking focused, powerful and motivated athletes who want to fulfil their Olympic or Paralympic ambition. (E.g. canoeing, handball).
The Role of UK Sport – Governing body for Olympic Sports
Distributes National Lottery funding to NGB’s to run the World Class Programme.
Finances the institutes of sport + provides world class facilities (E.g. Loughborough Uni - indoor track. Bath Uni - bobsleigh start facility).
Organizes winter training facilities/camps – E.g. Altitude training/Font Romeu
Works to promote ethical behaviour/ runs UK Anti Doping strategy. E.g. UKAD 100%ME
Supports development of world class coaches – Athlete to Coach
e.g. Christian Malcolm – Ex athlete now Head of British Athletics
Attracts world class events – E.g. London 2017 World Champs
UK Sport manages: Talent I.D #discoveryourgold, Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) – Athletes in education may be eligible for a grant, Performance Lifestyle Advice
The Role of the National Institutes of Sport
Provide World Class Facilities through High Performance Centres. E.g. Loughborough University swimming/ Manchester cycling.
Sport Science support including nutrition, psychology, strength and conditioning, physiology etc – working with coaches.
Medical Support; doctors, physio – E.g. injury prevention, health + well-being, rehabilitation.
Talent ID #Discover your gold
Technology - sports wheel chairs, prosthetic design.
Research – into enhancing training e.g. aerodynamic bikes
Lifestyle advice – Dealing with the media/interests away from sport
How do schools contribute to elite sporting success?
Participation pyramid of a range of sports.
Introduce students to competitive sport (inter school).
Extra curricular sport (intra school)
School club links increase community participation.
Increased number of PE Qualifications/ E.g. GCSE PE/ A level PE/ Sport Btec/ Sports Degree.
Educate about the health benefits of PE/ fundamental skills
How do clubs contribute to elite sporting success?
Specialist facilities/equipment
Employ qualified or experienced coaches to improve players
Competition - frequent competitions / leagues for players to participate and gain experience.
Recommend players for regional/county trials.
