Why are people moving into urban areas in China?
-People are moving towards the wealthier areas for higher wages
-better living conditions and housing
-clean water, electricity and transport
-rising labour demand in coastal cities
What is the hokou system?
It acts to prevent large internal migrations by restricting access to services to anyone not born in a certian area.
What would someone not be able to access without an urban hokou?
They wouldn’t be able to access healthcare and education within an urban centre.
What has the hokou system resulted in?
Large populations of unregistered residents in the cities, often living underground or in shared accommodation.
When was the hokou system established?
in the 1950s, after the Chinese communist revolution
Permanent migration is only allowed for…
only highly educated workers, or those who have family already legally resident in the city.
Hokou workers earn…
less and their families have no entitlement to schooling or healthcare
2/3 of urban migrants…
are men as women and children often remain in rural areas
What industries do China depend on?
Manufacturing and service industries within it’s cities, the hokou system is now too restrictive
What does the hokou system put pressure on during the holidays
Pressure is put onto the transport system during public holidays with so many urban workers returning to their rural homes and families.
How many people in China are on less than 2 dollars a day?
362 million, and most of these are from rural areas.
