Many Caribbean migrants faced open hostility from the white British population.
What riot took place due to the Windrush generation?
The 1958 Notting Hill Riots, where a mob of 400 white people attacked Black residents over several nights
Why did British people feel threatened by migrants?
Many white British workers in working-class areas felt threatened by the prescence of Caribbean migrants as they believed they were taking job opportunities for lower wages.
What type of jobs did the Windrush generation take?
Low-paid and labour intensive jobs in sectors like transport, healthcare and factory work. However, they were often overworked, underpaid, and had fewer opportunities for career progression.
What immigration laws were put in place?
Commonwealth Immigrants Act in 1962 and immigration Act in 1971. This limited the rights of Commonwealth citizens to settle in the UK.
