What would you do if a student disclosed a safeguarding concern to you
I would listen calmly and reassure the student that they have done the right thing I would avoid promising confidentiality and must explain that I have to pass the information on. I would record the disclosure factually and promptly then report this to one of the designated safeguarding lead reporting this to either Kathryn Billingsley, Joe, Lisgo or Michael Richardson using the appropriate system, I would remain professional and discreet to protect the student, well-being and privacy.
I would ensure that I would listen listen to the child and take them seriously I would also try to clarify any information rather than asking open ended questions for example, asking can you tell me what happened rather than did such do this to I would remain calm and would not show signs of shock, horror or surprise I wouldn’t express any feelings of judgement regarding anyone. In the situation. I would explain to the child that the information would have to be referred to the DSL I would reassure the child that they will be taken seriously and supportive and kept safe. I would listen and take account wherever possible the child’s wishes and feelings about any current situation as well as a future plans, I would ask the necessary questions to determine the child’s wishes and feelings. Explained that only those who need to know will be told, and I would explain that what will happen next and how the child will be involved as appropriately as it should be would ensure there is appropriate support made available and complete the cause for concern form on Sea POMS. If I was ever, in any doubt, I know that I could speak to the DSL regarding any concerns that I may have about a child I would be someone the child can talk to, and I would make sure to provide a safe and calm environment where they feel listened to and informed of the procedures.
How do you ensure students are safe in PE lessons?
I would firstly make sure that I am up-to-date on the department policy for safety procedures in P and that I am aware of any updates or changes in the keeping children. Safe in education document. I would conduct the risk assessments to ensure appropriate warm-ups and equipment checks have been done. I maintain clear routines for behaviour but also safety reasons for example asking students to line up where they are visible and not leaving the class unattended. I would strictly follow department policy to ensure the safety in and amongst the changing rooms. I would make sure that every student feels safe in the PE lesson emotionally by not singling out vulnerable children who may be in signs of distress or physical harm. I would make sure that I am fully aware of the first eight procedures and who the first aiders are that I can contact if there were to be an accident. I would then report this in an accident form and inform the correct person.
I would especially be noting and reporting as soon as possible. Any marks or bruises on children that I have noticed in the changing room or any conversations I have overheard from children that maybe concerning . I would ensure that any visitors spotted walking to Peter facilities or amongst the school had visitors badges. If they didn’t have a visitors badge, I would ask if they needed any assistance and notify the designated safeguarding lead.
How can you be confident that you can safeguard children in all lessons and around the school?
I would make sure that I have read the most up-to-date, keeping children safe in education document.
What are the most recent updates or changes in the keeping children safe in education document?
there are many updates in the keeping children safe in education document from 2024 notably I would make sure that I am up-to-date in the new definition of online safety that explicitly includes protection of maltreatment online which would highlight the importance of digital safety. I would also make sure that I am up today in any staff training as this has been emphasised in the most recent document. I would also ensure that any children requiring mental health support in my lessons have all their needs met and that I am being attentive to their needs as this has been noted in the document most recently.
