What are some features of schizophrenia?

A
  • Around 0.5% of population have schizophrenia
  • In UK around 1% of individuals have a schizophrenia diagnosis
  • Roughly equally common in men + women but men diagnosed earlier (adolescence) than women in later 20s/30s
  • Men tend to have longer duration + higher severity of disorder

What are positive symptoms?

A

Something that is additional, in excess, or a distortion of functioning

What are negative symptoms?

A

Something that reflects a withdrawal/decrease from functioning

To be diagnosed with schizophrenia, you need to have both positive + negative symptoms (feature)

What is thought insertion?

A

When an individual believes the thoughts they’re having arent their own

They believe an external source is pushing thoughts into their head, can be perceived as type of delusion

What are hallucinations?

A

Experiencing something as if its part of the external world that isnt part of reality

Can have different types, e.g auditory and visual. Auditory is the most common + must be experienced when individual is awake for it to be considered a symptom

What is social withdrawal?

A

Actively chosing not to participate in social activities. Person may choose to completely isolate themselves

Less interest in socialising or other peoples lives, negative symptom

A

Belieiving in things that arent true. Even when oresented with evidence that shows the belief isnt true, they continue to hold the belief

What are the 2 types of delusions?

A

Grandiose delusions = Believing themselves to be really important, hold powers, or are famous. May think theyve made a discovery only they know about

Persecutory delusions = Where individual believes that there’s people out to get them or harm them

What is disordered thinking?

A

Thinking that doesnt follow a clear pattern + doesnt make sense

Can be seen through individual’s speech - speech may not make sense or seem loosely connected because they cant make clear links between

May answer questions with answers that dont fit

A

Characterised by flat, apathetic tone, + little emotion displayed in voice
