School agers (6 to 12yrs): Maturation of Systems
Bladder cap inc, HR/RR steadily DEC, BP INC, immune system becomes more competent (but are more sick when they start school bc they don’t have the antibodies to fight infections)

Deciduous teeth lost and perm teeth erupt/avg child gains 28 teeth btw 6 & 12 yrs, this is the time when kids get braces/orthodontist work

Cavities are a huge issue in this age group, floss (most children hate to, atleast 2/day), brushing 2/day, promote good snacks (protein/dairy), fruits and veggies

MILESTONE: Brain growth (size) complete by 10 yrs; greater stamina and energy, bone growth faster than muscle and ligament dev, susceptible to fractures, vision 20/20 by 6-7yrs

Industry vs Inferiority - children get the skills to help them become active members of society, attain personal/interpersonal competence thru technologic/social skills, may take part in things that require practice, music/hobbies are enjoyed if they are small and short in duration, need freq reinforcement of the “process” rather than the “product”, short model in short amt of time helps them gain industry, accomplishment encourages dev (child with diabetes may gain sense of achievement by learning to assess own glucose level)

concrete operational - able to use thoughts to experience events/sit’s, mental operations such as classifying things, much less rigid and egocentric, progress from making judgements on what they see (preconceived thinking) to making judgements on what they think (conceptual thinking), learn reversibility meaning they can think about things and the consequences of those actions, learn conservation of liquid, mass, length, area etc, can also serialize things -collections by age 7 and sort/catalog by age 8

Conventional Morality - Stage 3 or 4 - individual acts to gain approval of others, good beh is what pleases others, RESPECT FOR RULES, laws and properly constituted author, RARELY QUESTION THOSE IN AUTH Ithis is a huge reason why so many children in this age group are sexually molested, they do not question the auth figure who is telling them what to do and to not say anything, for ex), believe what adults tell them to do is right, and feel guilty when they break rules

learn syntax of lang and grammar, able to use lang to give directions, can make inferences about word meanings, meta-linguistic awareness (they understand jokes, riddles, puns, humor)

peer groups huge, both sexes tolerant of each other, learn to argue/persuade/bargain, confidence in family gives them the ability to “venture forth” into the world, sibling conflict inc as siblings get older, parents must act as parents not PALS, CONSISTENT CONTROL AND STRUCTURE, parents help these kids not act on every urge, body image emphasis is huge here, head is most noticeable part of body, aware of disabilities, concerned but not express concerns to fam

2 yr period that precedes puberty, differences btw boys and girls, EARLY APPEARANCE of secondary sex characteristics in girls and LATE APPEARANCE in boys (associated with risk taking behaviors) Summary - girls who dev earlier become more involved in risk-taking beh, and boys who hit puberty later feel as though they must “prove” themselves and “take risks”
