Science 4 Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is our solar system called and what is in the center?
Our solar system is called heliocentric and the Sun is in the center.
What is eccentricity?
Eccentricity is how circular something is. 0 to 1 (circle to oval).
What is an astronomical unit?
An astronomical unit is the distance from the Earth to the sun. It is around 150,000,000 km.
What makes up a planet
It must orbit a star, nearly have a spherical shape, and it must be larger than nearby bodies in orbit.
What is the Nebular hypothesis and how did our solar system form?
The Nebular hypothesis is how our solar system started and it is about a cloud that started to form a ball that turned into our Sun leaving the other rocks also known as our planets orbiting around it.
What are some common features of inner planets?
Rocky, terrestrial, metallic core.
What are some unique features about the inner planets?
Mercury has no atmosphere and is the smallest
Venus has a thick atmosphere and because of the greenhouse effect it is the hottest
Earth is the only one that has liquid water
Mars has the biggest mountain and canyon
What are some common features of outer planets?
Small rocky core, liquid hydrogen, Hydrogen and helium atmosphere, rings, moons.
Why do gas giants have a liquid Hydrogen layer?
Pressure.
What are some unique features of each outer planet?
Jupiter has a fast rotation, a cloud banding/red spot, and is the biggest
Saturn has rings, is less dense than water
Uranus has a 90 degrees tilt AKA is drunk
Neptune & Uranus have a liquid layer also has water, ammonia slushy
Why was Pluto reclassified?
It was smaller than 6 moons
Elliptical Orbit
Orbit is 17 degrees of plane
Kuiper Belt others like it.
what are some dwarf planets?
Pluto, Eris, Haumea, Makemake, Ceres.
What are the parts of a comet?
Comet orbit is elliptical, short and long period.
