Science 7 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather describes short-term atmospheric conditions (like today’s temperature and rain), while climate is the long-term average of weather patterns in a specific region, typically over 30 years or more.
What are weather variables?
Temperature, rainfall, wind speed and direction, air pressure, humidity, clouds
Relative humidity vs. dew point
Relative humidity is the amount of water vapor present compared to the maximum amount the air can hold at a given temperature, while dew point is the temperature at which the air becomes saturated
What is low pressure?
Warm, wet, rising
What are air masses?
A body of air with horizontally uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure. Sometimes hot others cold
What happens when air masses collide?
A thunderstorm appears
What are the global wind cells?
Hadley, Ferrel, Polar
How does convection create cells?
Through the cycle of rising warm air and sinking cool air
Which cell doesn’t operate by convection?
Ferrel
Why do the winds move east/west?
Coriolis effect
How does the coriolis effect impact global winds?
Deflects winds, creating global wind patterns.
