Science 8 Flashcards
(14 cards)
How do thunderstorms form?
When moisture rises unstable air and the stages of it are first developing, then mature, and last dissipating.
How does lightning form?
Lightning is static electricity on steroids and it is caused by separation of charge.
How do tornadoes form?
Air moving at two different speeds and then one rolls over the other one. It is when a Funnel cloud touches the ground.
During weather safety what is the difference between a watch and a warning?
A watch is you should probably have a plan of action/ there is a risk of weather in the near future, and a warning is to take protection/ it is happening.
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather is the short-term atmospheric conditions and climate is the atmospheric conditions over a long period of time.
What is specific heat?
The heat required to raise the temperature of something.
How is climate affected by altitude, latitude and large bodies of water?
Climate at higher altitudes is usually cooler, and it takes a lot more energy to change the temperature of water making it cooler/warmer. Latitude because countries at the same latitude will have the same amount of sunlight.
How does specific heat relate to climate?
Water’s specific heat doesn’t change temperature quickly.
What are the five different climate types?
Topical, Dry, Temperate, Continental, and Polar
How do the climate types vary by temperature and precipitation?
Tropical climates are hot, with high precipitation, while temperate climates have milder temperatures. Dry climates have low precipitation, and polar climates are cold with limited precipitation.
What is a microclimate?
A small climate.
How do scientists measure climate across history?
They look at tree rings, ocean sediments, and ice cores.
What are the three Milankovitch cycles?
Orbit, tilt and axis wobble
How do the ocean and atmosphere interact to affect climate?
Southern oscillation and monsoons
