Science 6 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are some roles of the atmosphere
Gasses, blanket, UV and meteor protection
How has our atmosphere changed over time?
Overtime we have increased the amount of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.
Where did water and carbon dioxide go?
Water and carbon dioxide dissolved into oceans.
Where did oxygen come from?
Oxygen came from photosynthesis.
What is the greenhouse effect?
A process where gases in Earth’s atmosphere traps heat.
What gasses reflect IR?
Carbon Dioxide, Methan, and Water
What are all the energy transfers?
Radiation, conduction and convection
What happens to warm air?
Warm air rises and expands. It is stable whenever it is over cold air, but is unstable if it is under cold air.
What happens to cold air?
Cold air sinks. It is stable when it is under warm air it is unstable when it is over warm air.
What is the relationship between sun, wind and ocean currents?
Hot air has a lower pressure, cold air has a higher pressure
What is a hurricane? What are the necessary “ingredients” for a hurricane?
A hurricane is an intense tropical storm with high winds. The lower the pressure the more damage it can cause.
What is a storm surge?
A storm surge is water blown outward from the center of a tropical cyclone, eventually sweeping up onto the coastline as a large wave.
