(10 cards)
What contains the male gamete a haploid cell with half the DNA required to make new plant?
POLLEN
Transfer of pollen from anther(male) to stigma(female)
POLLINATION
What is cross pollination?????????? I dunno, U might say……well flip the card over!
Pollen traveling from one flower to another. This is desirable in plants cause it makes variations of different plants. (THIS TYPE OF POLLINATION IS NNNNOOOTTTT THE SAME AS SELF POLLINATION!!!!!!!)
Self pollination?
Self pollination is when the pollen falls from the anther to the stigma of the same flower. This is not desirable cause it reduces variation. (SELF POLLINATION IS NNNOOOTTT THE SAME AS CROSS POLLINATION)
What can pollen be carried by?
Insects (Gross!) or…… By wind
What are insect pollinated flowers adapted to?
Insect pollinated flowers are adapted to attract insects to them to enable transfer of pollen. Extra info:
- Pollen has barbs to hooking onto insects furs
- The nectar and the scent is present to the insects
- flower has sticky stigma to collect pollen
- The answers are positioned to rub pollen onto insects
- The flowers have brightly colored petals to attract insects
Why are wind pollinated flowers structured differently than insect pollinated flowers?
They are different in structure because they need to be exposed to wind, not to attract insects. For example, they have small and light pollen grains that occur in very large numbers, petals are different to not attract insects, stigmas are sticky to catch pollen carried by wind, anthers are exposed to the wind so there pollen can be carried away easily, and no scent
How do flowersprevent self pollination?
They have stigma about stamina or have stamen and stigma mature at different times
What happens after pollination occurs?
A tube grows from thepollen grain down through the style to the ovule
When does fertilization occur?
It occurs when the male gamete fuses with the ovule (female gamete)
