Scientific method Flashcards
-Understand each steps + controls (9 cards)
What consists of the observation step of the scientific method?
Things you observe about the world around you.
What consists of the question step of the scientific method?
Want to find an answer to what you observes
What consists of the hypotheisis step of the scientific method?
A guess that leads to a prediction
Must be falsifiable
What consists of the prediction step of the scientific method?
An “If…, then…” statement
“If (hypotheisis is true), then (predicted outcome of an experiment)”.
What consists of the experiment step of the scientific method?
What do you need to prepare for the first part?
2 steps
-
Designing the experiment.
Need: experimental sample, positive control sample, negative control sample. - Performing an experiment.
What are positive and negative contols? What are they used for?
Positive: Sample that is placed under conditions that you know will produce the expected outcome.
Negative: Place under conditions that you know will not produce the expecte outcome.
Why are controls necessary?
- Give points of references that can be compared to the results of your experimental sample.
- Ensure that experimental equipements and conditions are working properly.
What consists of the analysis step of the scientific method?
Analyze data to know if hypotheisis was correct or not.
If hypotheisis is
WRONG: go back and make a new hypotheisis
CORRECT: draw a conclusion about the question
What consists of the conclusion step of the scientific method?
Answer to question based on results
Must be repeated many times to be accepted
