What is a sign?
A sign is anything that can be heard or seen on a screen or page.
They aren’t limited to words but can be images, gestures or sounds.
All of ways in which text can be communicated in media.
An example of a sign?
Words
Images
Use of colour
Symbols on the page
What is signifier?
The physical form/ literally what it is to create meaning.
What is signified?
The concept or idea associated with the signifier?
What is signification?
All 3 added together (sign, signifier and signified) which creates the meaning.
What is the icon (Pierce)
Signs that are meant to resemble or imitate the object they represent.
What is the symbol (Pierce)?
Signs that have a culturally associated relationship with the object they represent. E.G maths symbols.
What is an index (Pierce)?
Signs that have a direct, casual or physical connection to the object they represent. E.G Footsteps in the snow indicates someone walked there.
