1
Q

The sensory system is part of what system

A

nervous system

2
Q

What is the sensory system?

A

A system of sensory neurons that detect changes in the body’s environment and signal the CNS to react

3
Q

What are sensory receptors?

A

Part of the sensory neuron that receives stimuli from the body’s environment

4
Q

If the stimuli is strong enough

A

neurons trigger and electrical impulse and they travel to the CNS for interpretation

5
Q

You put your arm to the fire what happens ?

A

Stimuli triggers the sensory receptors on your hand and an electrical impulse travels to the CNS, the brain allows you to feel the sensation of heat on your hand and signals your muscles to move your hand

6
Q

What is the sense of proprioception?

A

The body’s sense of body position
Enables body to know where its parts are in relation to one another

7
Q

What are other senses other than the 5 basic ones?

A

Proprioception, balance, temperature, pain

8
Q

What is a general sense?

A

Sensation felt throughout entire body and has sensory receptors within other organs
Touch, temp,pain

9
Q

What is a special sense?

A

When there is a specific organ devoted to that sense

10
Q

What is the sense of touch?

A

The ability to sense texture, pressure, and other tactile stimuli

11
Q

What is a mechanoreceptor?

A

react to mechanical stimuli such as trexture, vibration, pressure, work in the sense of touch

12
Q

What is the sense of temperature?

A

The ability to detect changes in temperature
Utilizes thermoreceptors

13
Q

What is the sense of pain?

A

A general sense that with pain receptors in the skin, muscles, joints, bones, most internal organs

14
Q

What is a nociceptor?

A

A pain receptor, detects stimuli from damaged tissue, associated with sense of pain

15
Q

What is a proprioceptor ?

A

A type of mechanorecpetor found in tendons, muscles, and joints that sense location of body parts in relationship to one another

16
Q

What is conjunctivitis?

A

Pink eye, inflammation of the conjunctiva or the membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids or sclera

17
Q

Cause of conjunctivitis? Symptoms? Treatment?

A

Causes include infection or irritation, very contaiguous
Symptoms include itching, discharge in eye, excess tear production
Treatment includes antibiotics

18
Q

What are cataracts?

A

A condition where the normal lense of the eye becomes cloudy

19
Q

Cause of cataracts? Symptoms? Treatment?

A

Caused by aging and injury
Symptoms include blurred or partial vision
Treatment includes surgical replacement of lens

20
Q

What is conductive hearing loss?

A

When sound waves cannot move through the outer ear, into the middle, into the inner

21
Q

Cause of conductive hearing loss, symptoms, treatment?

A

Causes include blockages in the auditory canal
Symptoms include muffled sound and difficulty communicating
Treatment, remove blockages, antibiotics, hearing aids

22
Q

What is sensorineural hearing loss?

A

Result of damage to the inner ear

23
Q

Cause of sensorineural hearing loss, symptoms, treatment?

A

Exposure to loud noises, head injury, genetics, aging, disease
Difficulty hearing high pitched sounds and communicating with background noise
Treatment includes hearing age, nothing else

24
Q

What is otitis media?

A

Infection of the inner ear, mostly in young children

25
Q

Cause of otitis media, symptoms, treatment?

A

Causes are bacteria in middle ear
Symptoms are ear pain and fever
Antibiotics

26
Q

Cause of the common cold, symptoms, treatment?

A

More than 200 viruses can cause a cold
Symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, etc
No cure
