Simple sentence
Includes a single independent clause with no dependant clauses
e.g The dog sat on the sofa
Compound sentence
Includes 2 or more independent clauses joined by a conjunction such as ‘and’, ‘but’ or ‘or’.
e.g The dog and the girl were sleeping together on the sofa
Complex sentence
Involves one independent clause and at least one dependant clause, joined by conjunctions and subordinators (although, because, when, if)
e.g Although it was snowing, she decided to go for a walk after making her dinner
Compound-complex sentence
Includes multiple independent clauses and at least one dependant clause joined by conjunctions and subordinators.
e.g She enjoys going on her phone, but she prefers to go outside when she has free time because it allows her to get in her exercise
Declarative sentence
A statement that ends with a fullstop.
e.g. Holly was hungry
Interrogative sentence
A question that ends with a question mark
e.g. Are you okay?
Imperative sentence
A command, and revolves around imperative verbs such as listen, run and eat
e.g. Listen to what I am saying
Exclamative sentence
An exclamation that conveys an emotional point like surprise, and always ends with an exclamation mark
e.g. That is excellent!
Fragmented sentence
An incomplete thought where a subject or verb is missing
e.g. On the floor
Minor sentence
A small sentence which doesn’t have a main verb or a subject
e.g. Wow
