Skin Flashcards
(39 cards)
MC cutaneous disorder encountered in medical practice
acne vulgaris
prime defect of acne vulgaris
abnormal response of pilosebaceous apparatus to androgenic stimulation –> blockage of abnormal/excessive keratin –> comedone/blackhead
comedones become inflamed b/c of irritating effect of
free fatty acids formed by enzymatic effect of common skin bacteria upon sebum
idiopathic skin condition MC
Alopecia areata
prognosis of alopecia aereata is usually ______; especially if _____
poor
recurrent and/or extensive episodes
idiopathic condition, although may be due to viral infxn, food/drug allergies and psychogenic factors – small, discrete and painful
aphthous stomatitis (canker sores)
aphthous stomatitis needs to be differentiated from
Vincent’s angina
spirochete infxn, which primarily involves gingival and produces painful, red and swollen gums
vincent’s angina
characteristics of aphthous stomatitis ulcers
shallow
painful
white base surrounded by reddened area
MC locations for aphthous stomatitis
buccal mucosa, tongue, inner lips, gums
Atopic dermatitis AKA
generalized neurodermatitis
chronic, reoccurring idiopathic disease that hereditary/allergy and psychogenic factors are significant ; cannot vaccinate during active phase
atopic dermatitis (generalized neurodermatitis)
characteristics of atopic dermatitis lesions
bilateral
symmetric
may occur anywhere on body
3 distinguishing features of atopic dermatitis
pruritus, dry skin, and sweat retention
Secondary infxn is MC
most important difference btwn atopic dermatitis and other eczemas
does NOT appear before 2 months old; often clears up at 2-3 y.o., but flare ups followed by remission may occur in childhood/puberty/adolescence and adulthood
thickening of skin, exaggeration of skin marks (lichenification), papule, excoriations (scratch marks) hyper or hypopigmentation
atopic dermatitis (generalized neurodermatitis)
oozing and crusting seen in _____; MC locations are:
infantile atopic dermatitis (generalized neurodermatitis)
scalp and face
MC locations for childhood/adulthood atopic dermatitis
antecubital and popliteal areas, neck, face (eyelids), ears, wrists and hands
disease caused by repeated scratching or rubbing of skin; MC In women; usually only a SINGLE lesion; usually primary and expression of underlying emotional disorder
circumscribed neurodermatitis (lichen simplex chronicus)
Condition in which basic lesion is a localized patch of “elephant hide” - scaling, sharply defined, with increased prominence of skin markings – due to patient induced friction
circumscribed neurodermatitis (lichen simplex chronicus)
MC locations for circumscribed neurodermatitis (lichen simplex chronicus)
nuchal scalp and neck
inner thighs
lateral leg regions
common disorder caused by reactions to primary irritants or sensitizing agents
contact dermatitis (dermatitis venenate)
clinical features of contact dermatitis (dermatitis venenate)
redness, weeping and vessicles/bullae, swelling and scaling in well-defined patches; itching often seere
MC locations for contact dermatitis (dermatitis venenate)
back of hands, neck, eyelids, face, genitalia and legs
