An individual or group’s collection of beliefs about life and the universe. The overall perspective someone sees and interprets the world with
What does pervasive mean?
It means something is everywhere in the way we think about the world
What are the 7 elements of worldviews?
Geography, Time, Beliefs, Society, Values, Economy, Knowledge
What does the geography worldview mean?
Worldview is based on where you live and its climate
What does the time worldview mean?
Worldview is based on how society views time (sun, moon, seasons, clocks, etc.)
What does the belief worldview mean?
Worldview is based on what you think about life, death, and the environment
What does the society worldview mean?
Worldview is based on people and who has power, equity, and people doing certain things based on status
What does the value worldview mean?
Worldview is based on how people act towards each other and what treatments (of each other) are important
What does the economy worldview mean?
Worldview is based on the management and control of resources
What does the knowledge worldview mean?
Worldview is based on how people learn and who is taught
Are worldviews static?
No they are not static because our worldview shifts how we see things and how we act based on our experiences
What was the black plague?
Also known as the bubonic plague, the black death spread through rats and fleas and killed around 30-50% of the European population at the time.
What sparked the beginning of the renaissance?
The black death
What was feudalism?
The system of political organization during the middle ages. It was a hierarchy where people were ranked on their importance to each other
In feudalism, could you move from one level to another?
No, you were born into a rank and expected to stay in it throughout your life
What were the rankings in the feudal system?
Top: The crown (king or queen)
Below: Nobles and bishops
Below: Knights
Bottom: Commoners (freeholders and serfs)
What was feudalism based on?
Land, loyalty to the monarch, and duty
What did Nobles or knights have to do to get fiefs or manors?
They swore oaths of allegiance to the crown as signs of loyalty
What did the peasants do on the noble’s farmland?
Peasants would farm the land for the noble and receive a portion. In exchange for the harvest, nobles were sworn to protect their peasants
What were the types of peasants?
Freemen and serfs
Who were freemen?
Peasants who paid rent for the land and got to keep their harvest
Who were serfs?
Peasants who worked on the manors and wouldn’t be allowed to leave the manor without the Lord’s permission. Basically slaves
What is a monastery?
A building where monks lived and practiced their religious duties
What was the place where nuns prayed, lived, and studied called?
A convent
