What was the humanist worldview?
Humanists believe that people should use the power of reason to find truth for themselves, people should have open, curious, and questioning minds, people can achieve a lot through learning, and people should be skilled in many areas
Where did Humanist ideas originate?
Humanism came from 2 main ideas. The Greek and Roman civilizations that formed “Classical civilization” and the Islamic civilization. The Islamic civilization preserved the knowledge of the Classical civilization and further developed it. Math, sciences and medicine of the great civilizations were especially developed. The Islamic civilization was in India and the Far East
What Humanist ideas were expressed in most paintings?
There was a growing interest in portraits and landscapes, more reflection of interest in the individual, present world, beauty, and human excellence.
What did it mean when artists signed their work?
It meant they wanted to take the credit for it. Sometimes, this meant gaining fame
Who was Francesco Petrarch and what were his ideas?
Francesco Petrarch was an early Renaissance humanist thinker. Petrarch believed the Classical past was superior to the dark ages and the time he lived. He and other humanists believed that in order to be truly cultured, a person should read good books and look at great works of art. Petrarch collected Greek and Roman manuscripts, made copies and translations of them, and wanted to spread the ideas in them to everyone.
What are differences between art in the Middle Ages and Renaissance art?
Art in the Renaissance used perspective, proper proportions, light, more on realistic aspects of life (instead of religion), texture and pattern, elegance, and the natural world. Art in the Middle Ages was flat, less colourful, had unrealistic proportions, and had religious themes
What is civic humanism?
Civic humanists believed that being a responsible citizen meant educating yourself about history and political issues and working to improve society
How do we know Humanists based their ideas on the Ancient past?
They studied literature and Classics from Ancient Romans, based ideas off of Islamic civilization, influenced by 10 commandments, they used science and math ideas developed by Greeks, and they modelled their buildings after ones in Rome and Athens.
What was the most important philosophy regarding humanism?
The belief in the dignity and potential in the human being. This reflected the Christian worldview of dedicating and living a whole and good life for God
