What is social facilitation?

A

Where individuals perform better on tasks when in the presence of others e.g audience compared to when they’re alone

What is the home field advantage in social facilitation?

A

A large supportive home crowds provide home teams with an advantage this is a powerful effect + becomes stronger as the size of audience increases

What is evaluation/apprehension theory?

A

The perceived fear ot being judged. Apprehension caused because of the knowledge that someone is judging you eg scout, coach and judge. No comment from audience can be uneasing and suggests negative judgement.
Expert audience = intense
Some become motivated to play well or anxiety increases leading to inhibited performance.

What is self preservation theory?

A

The process by which individuals present hom selves to the social world - conciously +unconsciously
Usually motivated by a desire toor please or meet self needs
Levels of self preservationare dependant on our perception of own ability or perception of task (simple/complex) experience + how we perceive those watching

Strategies to overcome social inhibition

A

Over learn skill - autonomous need little attention =dominant response
Awareness of zone of optimal functioning
Appropriate use of attributions to elevate confidence
Practise selective attention
Mental rehearsal + imagery - block outaudience
Increase familiarity of performing in front of a crowd, increase self confidence
