how does education socialise us?
We are rewarded for doing good things and punished for doing the wrong thing
how does media socialise us?
We are increasingly shaped by ideas and images we see in the media. This is particularly true of young people.
define secularisation
Secularisation: the process of religion becoming less important in society.
how does workplace socialise us?
Many people define who they are by their job and their colleagues. Social class: the type of job an individual does has a big impact on their identity
how does family socialise us?
Primary agent, especially in early childhood, which influences language, basic norms/ beliefs, gender roles.
How do peer groups socialise us?
Peer pressure: fitting in with friends is seen as important and leads to norms and values
hidden curriculum definition
the unofficial things we are taught through school, such as punctuality and obedience.
how does religion socialise us?
Christian principles form the foundation of many values in British society. Religion is also important to many ethnic minority communities.
moral panic definition
the over-exaggeration and over-reporting of issues reinforces norms and values
Formal agencies of social control definition
Sets rules that everyone has to live by. Examples include the police, law and schools.
Informal agencies of social control definition
The way behaviour is shaped without written rules and codes of behaviour. The family, peer group and media are central to this.
