Spastic dysarthria Flashcards
(7 cards)
Spastic dysarthria
A speech disorder that results from the manifestation of spasticity in muscles associated with speech production
Hallmark characteristics
Imprecise articulation
Strained/strangled voice quality
Excess and equal stress
Speech characteristics
Imprecise constants
Monopitch
Harsh voice
Anatomic Basis of Spastic Dysarthria
Upper motor neurons (UMNs): are ending (efferent) tracts of axons that originate in the cerebral cortex and course through the CNS to synapse with the LMNs of the PNS
Common etiologies
Anything that may produce bilateral damage to the UMN pathways
Stroke
Trauma
Toxins
Diseases
Peripheral lateral sclerosis
Confirmatory Signs of Spastic Dysarthria
Hypertonia
Hyperreflexia
Primitive reflexes may be released
Resistance to passive movement
Spasticity in the limbs and articulators
Lesion effects
Lesions bilaterally to the UMNs will cause spasticity
