- Pressure squeezes the bolus toward the entrance to the esophagus and cricopharyngeus opens passage to esophagus

- Soft palate presents sentence into nasopharynx
- Larynx moves forward and up to protect airway epiglottis hinges over glottis
- Apneic moment: respiration suspended
- Fail safe - cough (if it doesn’t work)
