Spinal cord Flashcards
(23 cards)
Cervical enlargement is where?
C5 to T1 (for upper limbs)
The lumbosacral enlargement is where?
L1-S3 (for lower limbs)
Where is the inferior end of the spinal cord at 6 months gestation, birth, and adulthood?
6 months gestation: S1
birth: L3
Adult hood: L1-L2
Where is the anterior median fissure on the spinal cord?
It is in the middle of the anterior surface
Where is the posterior median sulcus?
It is the groove in the middle of the posterior side
where is the anterolateral sulcus?
attachment area of the rootlets of spinal nerves on the front
Where is the posterolateral sulcus?
attachment area of the rootlets of the spinal nerves in the back
Where is the posterior intermediate sulcus?
b/w the posterior median sulcus and the posterolateral sulcus only in the cervical and upper thoracic regions
Where is the central canal in the spinal cord?
remnant of neural tube; narrow cavity in the center of the cord that communicates with the the ventricular system of the brain
What does the posterior horn of the gray matter control?
sensory function
What does the anterior horn of the gray matter control?
Voluntary functions
What does the lateral horn of the gray matter do?
has the intermediolateral nucleus that is involved in the sympathetic nervous system
What is the intermediate zone of the gray matter involved w/?
consists primary of interneurons
what does the white matter of the spinal cord do?
Has ascending and descending fibers that connect the spinal cord to the brain
What are the regions of the white matter of the spinal cord?
Posterior funiculus
Lateral funiculus
Anterior funiculus
What is a spinal nerve?
The union of a posterior and anterior root
What does the anterior root do?
carries info away from the spinal cord
What does the posterior root do?
Carries information toward the spinal cord; Also contains the posterior root ganglion
What does the posterior/dorsal ramus innervate?
skin and deep muscles of the back
What does the anterior/ventral ramus innervate?
(much larger); skin and muscles of limbs and anterolateral trunk and superficial muscles of the back
Dermatome
Area of skin innervated by the sensory fibers of a given spinal nerve
Where would you obtain a CSF sample from?
The lumbar cistern; area of subarachnoid space below the conusmedullaris (below L1-L2)
What are denticulate ligaments?
20-21 tooth-like projections that attach to the dura mater through the arachnoid to stabilize the cord
