Define Society
An organised group of people associated for some specific purpose or with a shared common interest
Define Socialisation
A lifelong process where members of society learn the norms and values of society
Define Primary socialisation
Socialisation during early childhood, through the influence of immediate family, where core values are created
Define Secondary socialisation
Socialisation in teenage years, through the influence of peer groups, friends, schools, TV, social media and local clubs.
Occurs over a long period of time and can change core values
Define Social control
The way in which people’s thoughts, feelings, appearance and behaviour are regulated in society
Define Social change
An alteration in the social order of a society
Define Social issues
Problems which can affect many people within a society, e.g. gender pay gap
Define Inequality
Where resources or opportunities are unevenly distributed across a society
Define Social stratification
The dividing of society based on wealth or status
Define Social action theory
A way of viewing socialisation, emphasising social action.
- considers how sport can impact society

- people create organisations that shape wider society
- interactions lead to change in social processes
- prevents dominance of one group
Define Equal opportunity
The right to access the same opportunitues regardless of factors such as race, age, sex or disability status
Define Prejudice
A pre conceived opinion of an individual that is not based on reason or actual experience
Define Discrimination
Unfair treatment of a person based on stereotyping or prejudice
Define Overt discrimination
Visible/ obvious
e.g. verbal racist abuse
Define Covert discrimination
Hidden/ less obvious
e.g. player not being selected as captain due to their race
Define Stereotyping
Making generalisations about an individual due to them belonging to a certain group
