1st stage: proto-word
Utterances are consonant-vowel-consonant-vowel sounds that are similar to actual words
eg. “mama” “dada”
2nd stage: one word/ holophrastic stage
Single words that relate consistently to indentifiable referents
eg. “daddy”
3rd stage: Two-word
Utterances consisting of two words in a range of patterns
eg. “Daddy go”
4th stage: Telegraphic
Utterances with three or more words with key content words being used while grammatical function words are omitted
eg. “Where daddy gone?” “that my doll”
5th stage: Post-telegraphic
Utterances where grammatical words missing from the telegraphic stage start to appear and clauses begin to be linked into longer sentences
eg. “We went to the park and played on the swings”
