Shows that child’s life at home is uninspiring compared to the classroom.

Learning is being taken in by the students.

Just as sweetshops are places full of colour, so the classroom is full of things to trigger the kids’ interest and imagination.

Minor sentences extends simile idea. Listing effect transports the child into a magical world.

Positive and secure environment juxtaposed with evil and violence. The black and white newspaper is contrast with the colourful classroom.

Affirms security felt in classroom. The children are safe from the outside world.
“Left a gold star”
All Duffy is concerned about, not the evil outside.
“Xylophone’s nonsense”
Implies that the player is young and hasn’t mastered it yet.
