step one - identify hazards:

A

review the workplace and identify what has the potential to cause harm. then for each hazard identify how employees, contractors, visitors or members of the public might be harmed.
Some of the common hazards:
* lone working and remote locations
* spillahes
* rough/steep/uneven tarain
* flying debris
* noise/vibration
* water and flooding

weather can be considered as a haxard but also something that could influence the risk of a hazard causing harm

step 2- assess the risks (likihood, severity, number of people affected)

A

decide how likely it is that someone could be harmed and if so, how serious that harm could be. a simple risk assessment table can help with this.
some of the potential consequences of harm caused by the hazards from step one:
* fatality
* cuts, amputation, sharo - edged related injuries
* drowining, suffocation
* dermatitis
* physcological trauma

step 3- control the risks:

A

identify what control you already have in place to manage or reduce the risk. then consider the hierachry of contorl measures to determine what more can be reasonably done to either remive the hazard or reduce the risk of it causing harm

step 4 - record findings:

A

it is a legal requirement for an employer to record their significant findings if they employ 5 or more people. it is considered best practice to record the findings irrespective of how many people are employed, so that if there is evidence of rrisk mnaagement in the case of an accident.

Having a written risk assessment doesnt prove compliance with the important considertion is what they do to manage and control risk in the workplace. it is also important to ensure the diniding are effectively communicate dto everyone who needs to be aware.

step 5 - review the controls-

A

it is important to regularly review the control in place to ensure they are still working. they may be workplace changes e.g. new staff, equipment ect. which means the current controls are not as effective as they oculd be. it is also considered best practice to review the controls following any accident or near misses.
